Throughout my career as an entrepreneur, I’ve had times of throwing myself into my work with boundless passion, giving my all and taking hardly a moment to rest, followed by periods of feeling utterly uninspired, exhausted, and not sure what to do with myself.
It happened about a year after starting my first business, then again about half a year after launching my coaching practice, and again this year after a period of rapid growth.
I’ve experienced times of living in financial abundance while feeling trapped in a business that was no longer lighting me up, as well as times of feeling so burned out that all I could do was rest, rejuvenate in nature, find refuge in my sacred creative space—all that while feeling the increasing pressure of not having a steady source of income.
Recently, I had my best month(s) in my business yet, and again, I found myself in that same place: I had reached a level I had been working towards for quite some time, my business was flourishing, and then: burnout hit!
I felt as though my passion was gone … I was LOVING the work I was doing with my clients, but feeling uninspired in my marketing, confused about who I was and what I wanted for my next steps, and in addition, struggling to keep the balance between running my business, being the new “mom” of an 8 week old puppy, and making my own well-being a #1 priority.
I’m doing much better now, puppy is now 16 weeks and more independent, I’ve taken some (long overdue) steps to simplify the processes in my business, my energy is back, and I’ve found a new sense of calling and purpose through this experience.
In today’s blog, I wanted to share some of the insights I’ve gained in this time as well as my top #3 tips to get out of burnout and reclaim your joy, energy and freedom in life + business.
3 Steps to Break Free From Burnout + Make More Money With More Ease in Your Business
1. Do more of what lights you up, less of what drains you
First of all, understand that feeling empty and burned out is usually not just a result of working too many hours, but more than that, it means that you’re putting your energy into things that aren’t feeding your soul.
Have you ever noticed that when you’re totally inspired and incredibly excited about something, putting your ideas into action is much more effortless than when you’re doing something just out of a sense of obligation?
That’s because the energy you’re putting into your work is then coming directly from your infinite self, and there are no limitations to how much you can give or receive. As you share, you also receive abundantly.
While you’re working on your business, pay attention to what fills you with energy vs. what drains you. What doesn’t light you up and leaves you feeling depleted needs to go. Or: If it’s something essential like doing your bookkeeping, find a way to make it fun. Or, if you can, hire someone to do it for you.
2. Honour your sensitivity, protect your energy
If you’re a sensitive soul like me, chances are that you’re not just feeling exhausted from doing too much, but you also tend to take on energetic baggage from the world around you, often without being aware of it.
It’s absolutely essential that you learn to set healthy boundaries not just with your time, but with your energy as well.
For instance, if you’re spending lots of time mindlessly scrolling through your Facebook news feed, make it a habit to consciously disconnect from social media and spend more time in your own sacred space.
(Bonus tip: Spending time in nature is one of the quickest ways to rejuvenate, reconnect with yourself, and get out of overwhelm.)
Also, make sure you’re surrounding yourself with people who energize you rather than drain you, both in and outside of your business.
If you do any intuitive work in your business, remember to keep your space high vibe and regularly clear your surroundings.
3. Get out of survival mode, embrace LIFE!
Finally, what’s essentially happening when you’re feeling burned out is that you’re living in scarcity mode (= fear)—and as a consequence, you’re not LIVING fully.
This may or may not have a direct effect on your financial well-being, but regardless of your current income level, when you’re circulating just enough energy to survive, some aspect of making money will always feel like a struggle.
You’ll either find yourself working endless hours to create the income you desire, you may feel as though there’s never enough no matter how much you’re making, or you’ll compensate for your financial abundance by sacrificing your well-being in another area of your life.
The key here is to ask yourself what is REALLY holding you back from wanting to be fully alive, and then consciously CHOOSE life.
The answer to this question will be different for everyone. For myself, doing this work revealed that I was holding on very tightly to a series of traumatic childhood losses, and I wasn’t fully willing to move forward in this area of my life.
Once I gave myself permission to move on and start creating a new life rather than trying so desperately to fix the past, I almost immediately had my best (and most effortless) sales month in my business yet!
