I still remember the day I started my first business. It was all super exciting! A big and bold step into the freedom I had been dreaming of for so long. More time to travel, follow my creative passions, connect with the people I loved, go for loooong walks in nature, and just enjoy life … That’s what I had imagined my new life as an entrepreneur to look like.
When I finally took the leap and became my own boss, I caught a first glimpse of what was possible. No more epic one-and-a-half hour commutes, sleeping in just a bit longer in the mornings, having time to cook some super delicious and healthy meals for lunch, working on my sunny balcony in the summer months, traveling to Canada, Iceland, Italy without having to ask my boss first. All of that was awesome.
However, I soon learned that being a freelancer working mostly for corporate clients also had its downsides. In many ways, it wasn’t really that different from being an employee. Just like before, there were lots of deadlines, endless edits (if you’ve ever worked in the advertising industry you’ll know what I’m talking about), and most of the time, I was too tired from sitting in front of the computer 8 hours a day to have any energy left for my own creative projects.
On top of that, I now had a business to run, blog posts to write, social media accounts to manage—which, yes, I enjoyed because it was new, fun, and exciting, but after about a year of building my business with lots of passion, enthusiasm and hard work, I began to feel increasingly burned out.
I knew something had to change. Which is how (very unexpectedly and to my total surprise) my journey as a spiritual teacher began (read the whole story here).
Ever since then, I’ve had a lot more freedom in all ways, and in the last 7 years, I’ve pretty much created the life of my dreams.
Today, I work about 20 to 30 hours a week, I get to choose my clients, and I spend time out in nature, journaling in my favourite coffee shops, or traveling whenever I want to.
I love my work, I wake up excited to start my new day every single morning, and I’m grateful for all the wonderful ways my life has changed since taking my very first steps on the journey of entrepreneurship 8 years ago.
In this article today, I wanted to share some of my favourite tips with you to help you bring more ease and space into your schedule and create the joy, freedom and abundance you know is truly possible for you in your life and business:
1. Simplify Your Life
If making the money you desire in your business feels like an endless struggle and you’re working 40+ hours a week to get only half of your to-do list done, chances are that you’re making things too complicated. Instead of working longer hours, create space by focusing just on your priorities and letting go of everything else—especially the things that are draining your energy. The more you focus on what matters most, the more effortlessly you will create the results you desire in your business.
2. Check Your Foundation
Secondly, if moving forward in your business feels sticky, you’re constantly changing directions and not getting anywhere, or you’re simply not feeling that sense of passion that naturally makes your work feel joyful and effortless, it’s time to have an honest look at your foundation.
Ask yourself: “If I were completely free to do absolutely anything I desire right now, if I were a millionaire, and if money wasn’t an issue, would I still be doing what I’m doing in my business right now? What do I truly and deeply desire?”
The more you allow yourself to go for what truly lights you up, the easier it will be to create the results you desire, simply because you’re doing what you naturally do best, and you’re guided by your soul, not your ego. Also, it’s easier to RECEIVE when you’re in a state of allowing vs. resisting what you desire.
3. Raise Your Prices
Thirdly, if making money in your business feels much harder than it should be, it may be that your pricing isn’t aligned with your income goal. In my experience, most lightworkers, and especially women, tend to price their services too low, and then feel drained from over-giving and putting way too much time and effort into their marketing and/or client work.
Raising your prices may be scary at first, it may bring up doubts about whether or not anyone is going to invest at this level, etc. However, let me tell you this: It’s often much easier to sell a smaller number of higher priced packages than it is to sell a higher number of low priced services to reach the same income goal. You’ll be able to make more money while spending LESS time promoting your work, and you’ll also tend to attract more committed clients who get better results from working with you—a win-win for everyone.
4. Create Passive Income
If you’ve been in business for a while and if you’d like to increase your income without having to work with more clients 1:1, creating passive income products (or a product—one can totally be enough) can be a great way to make more money while also being able to serve more people with your work.
