When I relaunched my website a little more than a month ago, I felt inspired to bring back a quiz that had previously been my most popular opt-in, this time using a plugin instead of an external quiz app.
(Check it out here if you haven’t already—it’s fun!) :)
In the meantime, quite a few people have asked me how exactly I did it, so I thought I’d share the process in a quick tutorial.
How to Embed a Quiz in Your WordPress Site Using the ARI Stream Quiz Plugin
1. Find a Suitable Quiz Plugin
If you’d like to use your quiz to grow your mailing list, you’ll have to use a plugin that allows you to collect your visitors’ e-mail addresses. The best I’ve found for my purposes is the ARI Stream Quiz plugin. It’s easy to set up, contains lots of useful features, and I like its design, too.
There is a free version offering limited features. If you’d like to create a personality quiz like mine, you’ll have to purchase one of the premium plans (currently $17 for personal use and $25 for developers).
2. Download + Install the Plugin
To install the plugin, simply download it and then upload the entire ZIP file in your WordPress back-end.
From your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Plugins > Add New, then click the Upload Plugin button, locate the file on your computer, and click Install Now.
Once the plugin has been uploaded, activate it.
3. Adjust the Plugin Settings + Create Your First Quiz
If you’re using the ARI Stream Quiz plugin, you’ll find the link somewhere in the navigation menu on the left. (If you’re using a different plugin, the link may be in the “tools” or “settings” section.)
First, go to ARI Stream Quiz > Settings and adjust the settings according to your requirements. For instance, you can change the appearance (quiz layout), you can link the plugin to your e-mail marketing service (e.g. MailChimp), or you can specify the social media sharing buttons you’d like to be displayed at the end of your quiz.
Once you’re happy with your settings, navigate to ARI Stream Quiz > Quizzes and create your quiz!
4. Create a New Page and Copy + Paste Quiz Shortcode
Finally, go to the Pages section of your WordPress back-end and create a new page. This is where your visitors will be able to find your quiz.
Then navigate back to ARI Stream Quiz > Quizzes and find your quiz short code. Copy and paste it into the page you just created.
If you’d rather not use a plugin or if your website doesn’t support the use of plugins, an external app such as Qzzr can be a good alternative. I used this one in the past and it worked just great. The basic version is free, advanced options such as lead collection and custom branding start at $299/year.
